Next Step 1:
Talk to God and say, "Jesus, from now on I'm not going to just believe. I'm going to follow."
Next Step 2:
Follow Jesus' example of making your faith public through baptism.
Email: firstname.lastname@example.org to set up yours.
Next Step 3:
Have you ever thought about all these attributes of God?
Which ones excite you? Which ones seem confusing? Which make you hesitant or fearful?
Talk to God and ask Him to show you about who He is.
Next Step 4:
Many of us approach God with a performance based mentality. The idea that God's love and forgiveness is completely free seems almost too good to be true. And yet the essence of the Christian faith is that salvation is 100% dependent on God through Jesus Christ and not dependent on us at all.
What this means is that the most true thing about you is that God loves you.
This will NEVER change.
So, what do you think about the idea of grace?
Is it easy or hard for you to believe that God's love for you is unconditional?
Why do you think that is?
Next Step 5:
Here is an important thing to realize about the Bible- for Christians, the Bible is not true because it's our book. It's our book because we believe it shows itself to be true. The Gospels, for example, are not true because they're in the Bible. They're in the Bible because we believe history shows them to be true.
Come to the Scriptures with your questions. Come to them with your skepticism. It is alright for you to chew on what you read. No one just decides things are true without good reason. For example, no one picks up a newspaper and decides "I'm just going to believe everything in this." They let the evidence do the talking. In the same way we believe that historical evidence backs up Scripture.
And yet, if you're not there yet, that's okay. Start reading the Gospels anyway and see what happens. After all, what do you have to lose?
Next Step 6:
Take a couple of minutes to talk to God in prayer.
Start to think through how you are wired and when and where during the day may be best to spend time with God. Is it the morning? Your lunch break? The evening before you go to bed?
Think through these things and begin to develop a routine of spending some time each day talking to God. Don't worry so much about how much time you do it, the main thing right now is consistency.
Next Step 7:
It's important to realize that repentance is for our benefit, not God's.
The goal is not to make God accept or love us. He's already done that through Jesus.
Repentance is about turning from things that hurt us or others.
Things that we may not even be aware of, and yet God knows the damage they do and cares enough about us to say something to us.
Think of it this way- Have you ever been in a park or a mall and seen a parent telling a child to get down from climbing on something that they shouldn't be climbing on. Maybe it was something that could fall over on the kid, or could break easily. Normally the child is not aware of the danger they are in, or the damage they they could do. And yet the reality of it remains.
It's the same with repentance. When we repent, we choose to trust God, and we turn from something that may cause damage. Even if we don't see how.
Take a moment to quiet yourself and just ask God, "Lord, is there anything I'm doing that you want me to turn from?"
Next Step 8:
How good does a relationship with someone have to be that Jesus Himself would say that it's better for us to have that than Him physically on the earth? And yet, that's exactly what Jesus says about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the person of the Trinity that is with us on the earth now.
Take a moment to just stop and pray. Thank God for not leaving us alone. Thank Him for sending the Holy Spirit. And ask Him to show you what it means to have a friendship with the Holy Spirit.
Next Step 9:
God wants to speak to you. The best way to learn when God is speaking to you is to:
1. Start with the Bible. God will never contradict it.
2. Put yourself in a place to listen.
The way we best learn to discern the voice of the Lord is by spending time with Him.
Read the Bible and ask God to begin to speak to you through it.
Next Step 10:
Pray and ask God to pour out the Holy Spirit on you.
Next Step 11:
In this life everyone faces temptations. This was true for Jesus and true for Christians as well. It's important to realize that it is not a sin to be tempted. Sin occurs when we act on temptation.
The first key to overcoming temptation is to know yourself. Know the types of things that tempt you and then avoid them. But in those times where that's not the case, know that God will NEVER let you be tempted past what you can handle and will even give you a way out so you don't have to fall.
For your next step, begin to develop a routine.
When you are tempted, instead of trying to white-knuckle it, do two things:
1. Get out of the situation that tempts you whenever you can.
2. Pray and ask God to help you when tempted.
Next Step 12:
Pray two things:
1. Ask God to give you the boldness to share what He's done in your life.
2. Ask Him to highlight to you or bring to mind people that He wants you to talk with.
Next Step 13:
Read Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12:1-31 to see about spiritual gifts listed in the Bible.
Ask God to bring out what gifts He's placed in you, and ask Him to show you opportunities to use them to serve other people.
Pray about using your gifts by plugging in and serving at our church.
To arrange a "first look" to test out and see if an area of ministry fits with your gift set email us: email@example.com
Next Step 14:
Pray and ask God to show you how you can love Him and love others better.
Then ask the Holy Spirit to show you if there is anyone that you're not being loving toward?
Is there anyone you need to forgive?
Is there anyone that you can show grace to or help?
Next Step 15:
Don't do life alone.
Begin to experience biblical community.
